Chevrolet Repair: Transmissions--HELP!!!!, chevrolet dealer, joni

Question
Hi, I would like to know costs on transmissions, and just the transmission in general.  I am a female that has a 2001 Impala in the shop getting a new transmission.  I believe I am being ripped off and would like to go in knowing what I am talking about to confront the owner of the shop.  They are 'rebuilding' it, and I would like to know how they are 'rebuilt' and specifecs on putting an absolute brand new transmission in versus putting in a rebuilt, or having someone rebuild it and costs to expect.  FYI-it is a small business in southern MN and I am being charged $1800.  However, I have discovered that I could've had a brand new one from GM for roughly $2000.  Could you tell me the truth in this, and what you would suspect it should cost to rebuild it vs having all brand new everything, as I just repeated myself.  I hope you can help me as I am completely frazzled over the whole thing......thanks!

Answer
Hi Joni, I'm not the man to ask on prices as I do the repairs and not the billing. This is what I can tell you. The "Brand new GM trans" is not NEW. It is rebuilt and has a 3 year 50k warranty on it. If they are doing the job complete for $1800 this sounds like a fair price to me. Just make sure that the warranty is good!! I'm going to guess a GM trans alone is $1800. You can call your locate chevrolet dealer for a quote over the phone for a GM trans installed.

Hope this info helps you
