2001 LS-1 Convertable (automatic) 60,000 miles
modertly driven. Battery was dead one morning after I had let it idle for a lengthy time the evening before. Removed battery, trinkle charged and replaced. Started fine showed 14.4v on the display. Drove it about 100 miles (trip) and noticed that each time I stopped and restarted the volts would drop but maintain as follows: 13.9v, then 13.5v. On the way home in the evening it got down to about 12.7. Next morning showed 11.1 before starting. After starting went to 14.4v and the same sequence of events begin again..
1.. Is this normal
2.. what should v read before start
3.. should it maintain 14.4 at all times.
4.. Battery or alt. problem?

      Tks.. Fred

Normal charging volts vary between 13.8 to 14.2 volts.

You can remove BOTH the battery and the alternator and HAND CARRY both componnets into most any larger auto parts stores and they will test them for FREE.

Also the normal amount of AMPERAGE draw from the battery when the vehicle sits overnight is 0.50 amps (1/2 amp). ANYTHING OVER 1 amp is EXCESSIVE and requires tseting especially IF you have recently installed SOMETHING else in the vehicle.

let me know.

   Is the readout on the display volts from the battery or alt output. at what "voltage" reading should I worry that the car will either quite running or not start.. I am now fixtated on this reading and wondering if I will be able to make it home at night.. Hummm You just said take them to a shop and have them tested.. I will but still courious..
BTW.. I cant thank you enough for a venue (and individual) that volunteers his time to help, especially we "older" Vette owners.

Answer
IF the vehicles computer system senses a voltage level under about 8 volts at the computer you will go into the WALK MODE with your thumb in the air.

The computer shuts down in order to protect it's inetrnal resistors and transisitors.

Just because you have VOLTAGE being displayed on the dash gage, Does NOT guarantee that you have sufficient AMPERAGE and without AMPERAGE your in the walk mode.
