Chevrolet Repair: blue smoke upon starting, mile oil changes, oil seeps

Question
i own (10yrs) 89 chev caprice v8 305 fuel injected that gives off large puffs of blue smoke when starting after sitting overnite, but doesn't burn much oil between 3000 mile oil changes (maybe about a pint or so)i am aware that worn valve guides an/or seals will usually cause this..but will also burn a lot more oil than i am...car has 100,000 miles.  would appreciate your thoughts on the cause

Answer
your problem is a classic example of worn out valve stem seals.

What is happening is that when the valve stem seals cool OFF overnight they get HARD instead of being their normal soft feel.

Once you start the engine COLD the oil seeps past the valve stem seals until they start to get WARM then they become plyable and tighten onto the valve stem.
