Chevrolet Repair: 1988 celebrity stalls, torque converter clutch, upper radiator hose

Question
my 1988 celebrity(2.5L FI) runs great in town.  once i take it out on the road, and reach higher speeds, it will run fine until i come to a stop. it will then stall. it starts up immidately, but when put in drive or reverse, the engine stalls.  it will not move.  i have tried to not come to a complete stop (a little power braking to keep the rpm's up) the engine shakes until i reach around 30 to 40 mph.  if i leave the car sit for around 4 to 7 minutes without tring to start and move the car it clears up, and runs fine until i reach a higher speed.  then the problems start again.  this car is driven daily to work and home (city -low mph)has 165,000 miles, serviced regularly.
any help would be appreciated
Randy

Answer
Hi Randy, This is caused by the transmission torque converter clutch staying applied at stops. This will act just like a manual trans when this happens. To repair the easy and cheap way without doing any damage to the transdo this.

There is a plug in the front of the transmission that controls the torque converter clutch. You need to locate this plug/connector and disconnect it from the trans. If you look from the front at the upper radiator hose, go down about 12 inches and you should see this connector. The retainer is on the bottom and is easy to get to from under the car but you might be able to reach it from the top.

Let me know how you make out        Mark
