Chevrolet Repair: Brain?, chev truck, electronic circuits

Question
My husband drives a 98 Chev truck- automatic.  He left the lights on Monday and the battery went dead.  Some of the guys he works with tried to help him jump start, but once they got the battery charged, the truck would start, but then immediately die.  It acts like it's not getting enough fuel to keep it running once it's started.  The same guys told him that it's probably the trucks brain that sometimes shuts down after the battery has been run too low.  Is this true?  What is the best way for him to see if this is the problem?

Answer
Hi Sherri,
I have had the symptoms you describe on a Dodge truck, with a very new battery that was allowed to drain. Charging the battery to where it showed good voltage, and would start the truck by itself and all....but until I disconnected the battery, and then reconnected it, the truck would not idle.
I would not go out and buy any brain, ecm etc.
Unhook the battery for several seconds, then try it.
By the way, if the truck was crank started with a battery charger, there is a possibility of damaging electronic circuits, including the brain, but if that were the case, I would expect it to not start at all.
Try the battery thing.
