Chevrolet Repair: Chevy Blazer 2000 Loud Noice, chevy blazer, warranty policy

Question
Mark,

My Chevy Blazer, 2000, began making a loud noise coming from the front right around winter time when I started using the 4X4.  It was misdiagnosed and not fixed ($450 wasted) about a month ago.  One dealer now has said that I need the "Hub bearing assembly" replaced and that the right lower ball joint could be a problem.  They also said the front differential is bad.  Another dealer said that they wanted to replace the transfer case switch and the right lower ball joint, and then they wanted to do an alignment.  After that they would be able to investigate the front differencial.  Evidentially the blazer is slipping in (or out?) of 4x4 when braking.  Even though I have a PowertrainCare warentee covering front- and rear-wheel drive, both dealers claim that it will not be covered under warentee.  Neither of the dealers can give me a straight answer as to whether or not their solution will fix the noise.  I am worried that this will end up being a rat hole where I need to keep dumping money into it.  Does this problem with the noise sound familiar to you, and how would you advise that I act on this?

Thanks!

Answer
Hi Josh, The part that caused this is the transfer case switch. It didn't engage the front front haftshaft all the way and caused the shift sleeve and gear to get damaged. To repair this you need a ....New transfer case switch, new shift sleeve and the gear that the sleeve moves onto. This is a common thing on these trucks, I would think that the warranty policy you have would cover this repair.
I have done alot of these repairs and it take about 2 hours to do.

Let me know how you make out        Mark
