Chevrolet Repair: 83 chevy camaro, chevy camaro, mixture control

Question
I just bought an 83 chevy camaro. It ran fine for the first week, then I was driving down the road and it stalled. I lost my power brakes and my idle dropped so low it wouldn't stay running. I sprayed some carb cleaner in it and it threw a flame out and suddenly it idled correctly and the power brakes came back. When I went to drive it the next day it had happened again. Some people think it is the carb, a vaccum leak or the computer. What would you think. I don't know where to start. It's a 2.6 v6 with an attitude problem. Thanks, Stephanie

Answer
Hi Stephanie, It spraying carb cleaner into the carb makes it run then I would say it is in the carb. It could be a computer controlled item like the mixture control solenoid. These went bad often. I would look for a reman carb for it if this is the problem. Just make sure that the fuel filter isn't plugged before doing anything!!!  Another thing, if it does start by pumping the gas right after it stalled you might have a bad fuel pump. There should be enough gas in the carb bowl so that you can pump the gas pedal 5-8 times and it should at least fire on a couple of cylinders.
