Chrysler Repair: ac/heater diversion; 99 Neon

Question
QUESTION: I have a '99 neon.  The a/c heater air diverter isn't working properly.
The switch is mechanical only I think and doesn't click into position any longer.  Therefore the air flow is not changing between floor, dash etc.

I have tried to remove the control panel with two screws but it will not budge. Maybe more screws under dash?  Wondering if the hangup is in the panel or deeper in the dash and what exactly is hanging. I don't put things on the dash and I'm the only driver so not sure how it got jammed.

ANSWER: Hi Reid,
I have the '97 and the '01 Neon print manuals and they differ as to accessing the control knobs but are similar as to the cable adjustment for the "mode" door which is what allows you to move the air to different outlets. On your '99 are the central air duct panels (the two side by side air openings at the top of the stack) strictly rectangular in shape or are their outer edges curved?
That would be indicative to me as to which set up you have in your '99. Then I can either photocopy and mail you the pages from the '97 manual or email the pages from the '04 manual which I have on a CD and are similar to those shown in my 91 print version manual.
Please read the PS (below) and respond to it.
Thanks,
Roland

QUESTION: Yes I have the two side by side vents as in the '97.  I may have already what you are going to send.  I have a pdf of the '97 year. If you have the chrysler shop manual version that would be great as I don't see how to get into the dash to access the 'mode' door.

Answer
Hi Reid,
There are 2 doors, side-by-side in the early and later versions, the difference is in the actual shape (outline) of them. The earlier are strictly rectangular, while the later have curved outer edges. I would have to photocopy and postal mail you the earlier version. But here are the steps for that version:
Remove the large rectangular lid that is on the top of the instrument panel, on the right side.
Remove (lift) the entire right side panel bezel (that held the lid) which includes the center air doors and the right side air door.
Remove the center vent duct now exposed for viewing.
Remove upper defrost duct
Remove inner defrost duct
Disconnect mode door cable at heat unit
Disconnect mode door cable at control panel.
The mode door cable adjustment is described as:
Attach cable to mode door actuator arm, and clip black casing against the stop
Attach other end of cable to instrument panel control know
Turn the know completely counterclockwise
While holding the know in that position pull the black casing of the cable. This will take up any free play in the cable and index the mode door to the mode knob.
There are some figures about the ducts, but none about the mode door/cable interface.
Please do rate/nominate me.
Thanks,
