Chrysler Repair: 90 Imperial power window mechanism

Question
QUESTION: Roland,

My 1990 Imperial's front passenger window rolled down the other day, and never went back up. I checked all the corresponding relays and fuses, but nothing seemed to be shot. After pulling the door panel, I found that the window motor is seized. I cannot for the life of me figure out how to remove it to replace it. I've unbolted it from the door, but it will not disengage from the gear track, and I don't want to break the glass or any other parts. Do you have a step by step on how to remove the window motor? Thanks!

ANSWER: Hi Ted,
The motor is not separately removable so you have to take out the mechanism entirely as one. There is a hazard if you try to separate the motor, of the spring unwinding and causing physical injury.
To remove the mechanism,
Remove door trim panel
Disconnect window lift plate from glass
Unbolt window track from door.
Unbolt window lift motor and unclip drive cables.
Disconnect electrical connections.
Carefully remove window track, cables, and drive motor assemble from door as a unit.
I can also photo copy the page that shows the figure of the mechanism and postal mail it to you if necessary. You may want to find a used unit at a wrecking yard. Interestingly in '92 the design changed to allow the separation of the parts of the unit and it is possible that a '92 will work in your '90 as well. I can copy the figures for your comparison.
Please read the PS (below) and respond to it.
Thanks,
Roland

QUESTION: Roland,

Thank you so much for your quick response! This will get me in the right direction for sure. I'm looking into the '92 "conversion" before I go with finding a replacement motor.

Will a few decent lengths of 2 inch masking tape be enough to hold that window in place while I extract the motor and assembly? If not, I'd like to know your advise on holding it in place.

Thanks!

Answer
Hi Ted,
That should hold it in place while removing the mechanism but I would want to support it from underneath with "fork"-like stick for any length of time.
Let me know if you want the pages from either the '90 or '92 manuals which I can photocopy and postal mail to you.
If you would be so kind as to rate this answer and as well give a "yes" to the question about a nomination of me to be 'volunteer of the month' I would be most appreciative.
