Chrysler Repair: 02 Jeep Grand Cherokee: P0760 code, jeep grand cherokee, solenoid pack

Question
QUESTION: Hello Roland,
Not sure if you are still out there, but here goes, I had my engine replaced this past May from the dealership. Then about a month later my 2002 Jeep started slipping. I had the transmission replaced in Sept It is now November and I have had 4 transmissions. I just got it out of the shop yesterday and it was driving good until tonight when I started to break. I felt it down shift a bit. When I accelerated it went into all gears, but my check engine light is still on. Also, I called them and told them that they need to fix it again, because I noticed that my gears are not in place. My neutral is my drive. Is this bad luck or what? How is it that I have had this many transmission replacements and it is still not working. Thank God for warranties. Please help me! Oh yeah, I took it to Autozone and that is the code they gave me. Then on my way home the check engine light went off. Something is not right. HELP! I don't know what else to do.

ANSWER: Hi Zee,
The gear shift lever being out of synch with the transmission is mainly an issue of adjusting the linkage between the shifter and the vertical rod on the transmission that operates the solenoid pack/valve body/transmission range sensor switch. But the 0760 code says that there is a problem with one of the 4 solenoids that controls the Overdrive clutch. Ths can occur either as the result of a fault in the solenoid/pressure switch assembly, a problem with the wire that connects the solenoid to the transmission controller, a faulty grounding of the controller, or a faulty controller itself. The check engine light will go 'on' when that fault code is recognized by the transmission controller.
I think you are doing well by insisting on the warranty to be honored. By the way, the warranty should be extended by the amount of time that the vehicle is not available to you, and even further I would try to get it extended such that you get a full time period of normal functioning that warranty is supposed to cover. I hope the warranty is still also available on the engine.
Another possible explanation for the out synch gear shift situation is that the engine mounting may be improper/defective because if the powertrain (engine + transmission) moves back and forth or side to side more than specification then that too could affect the cable length arrangement that connects the shifter to the transmission vertical shift rod.

PS Please 'rate' my answer, and where you see the question about a 'nomination' of me to be "volunteer of the month" consider responding with a "yes". Oh, I see that you did rate my answer, but not the yes for volunteer. If you would like to ask a follow-up question please do so and you will have another chance to rate and nominate.

QUESTION: Yes, I can't find the link to nominate you (^_^) can you send it please? Also, yes I do have a warranty on the engine with Holt Chrysler, but I have been going back and forth with them on this. I keep telling them that I believe the engine is part of the problem. I don't believe it was installed right,or it's not the right engine. They are giving me a hard time and they do not want to check it out. They keep saying I need to take it back to the where I got the transmission from. I have reported them to the BBB. It's like I don't have any other options. I will try to see if adjusting the linkage between the shifter and the rod. I know this will help some. Because again, my neutral is my drive. So I will have them fix that, but it is just hard to believe that I have went thru 4 transmissions since the engine was replaced. I will NEVER recommend Holt Chrysler to no one! Thank you Roland for your help. Don't forget to send the link for me to nominate you. Have A Wonderful Night. Didn't mean to disturb you. Good Night

Answer
Hi Zee,
Yes, do notice whether the entire engine/transmission unit tends to rock excessively from side to side while a friend revs the engine up and down. If it appears to be too 'loose' then that might be the engine side of this problem which Holt should remedy by verifying the engine/transmission mounts are correctly installed. And it could be that if as the result of this movement that vertical shift rod on the transmission was being moved out of the detent position for whatever gear you were in, then that would cause the transmission to get confused. It is just an idea, but at this point anything is worth looking into.
You will see below another opportunity to 'rate' and to 'nominate'. Thanks for doing that in my behalf.
