Chrysler Repair: 2002 Chrysler T&C - Codes 700 & 740, electrical solution, torque converter

Question
Hi, Roland.  I have a 2002 Chrysler Town & Country with 190,000 miles on it. I have a similar problem as Estelle (4/5/2008). Check engine light came on recently. Diagnostics came back with codes 700 & 740. Seems to be running fine (I drove back from NYC to Philly). Have set up an appointment with Cottman Transmission for next week. Is it safe to drive it until then?  Thanks.

Answer
Hi Mark,
No problem with further driving of it. That code says there is a problem with the torque converter lock-up routine and so it may not give you that slight extra efficiency and braking ability when it is still unlocked at speeds above 45 mph. It could be due to a problem with the torque converter or the fluid pump's bushing is wearing. Nothing will be harmed by driving with the 740 code and you would be aware if there were by it then going into limp-mode (drives in 2nd gear only) which means there is a second code which does need to be addressed. I would wait to deal with this if the only solution is the torque converter/pump replacement until something requiring a rebuild appears and then it can be repaired when the trans is out of the vehicle already. There is no simple electrical solution so the trans shop may well not be worth asking if there is a charge for asking/diagnostic.
