Chrysler Repair: lift pump, filter cap, 2001 dodge 2500

2001 dodge 2500 Is there a relay or sensor that tells the lift pump when and how long to run? Mine ran so long it ran so long it blew the fuel filter cap off.Is that a bad lift pump or something else? Thank You.

The lift pump is controller entirely by the Engine Controller. That you state the top of the filter housing "blew off" indicates that there could be a problem with the fuel overflow return check valve in the injection pump. The check valve is replaceable and is located on the injection pump.
