Chrysler Repair: Chrysler 2001 Sebring 2.7 DOHC, actron obd ii, blown head gasket

Question
I ran a Autoscan with actron obd II, receiving four codes; p0118, p0351, p0355 and p1391. My son had just return the vehicle after using the car for a week, I checked the oil and he had over filled by more than a quart and a half. I removed the extra oil and drove the car. It ran smoothly for about 15 min and became jerky. Would a blown head gasket be likely? How difficult would it be to replace?

Answer
Looking at your symptoms, I'd put the first three codes and the overfilled oil on the back burner, so to speak, and look more closely at the P1391 code. That code is for an intermittent loss of cam or crank signal. The cause could be as simple as just replacing a failing cam and/or crank sensor. Which is very possible. And could very possibly be the reason you experience the rough running only after the engine has heated up. (A failing sensors signal tends to degrade with increased heat.) On the downside it could also be an indication that there may be a wiring, PCM or engine problem. Suspecting the head gaskets may be a bit premature. I haven't seen many go bad on this engine without having many other symptoms and codes in the PCM. These engine tend to fail more from lack of oil or regular oil changes than anything else. Also, was the check engine light on after your son brought the car back? Or did you just check for codes as a matter of routine?
