Chrysler Repair: 99 lhs shift cable, shift cable, chry

Question
On our automatic 99 chry lhs, the shift cables broke off but they won't move at all,not even manually. It's not shifting at all, so i can't get it started to get it into a shop. Wondering if we're in over our head to fix it ourselves but willing to try. Have any how-to advice to give? also, what might have caused this? just recently had the car towed 3 days ago...

Answer
It's not unusual that the shift cables break on theses vehicles. They are routed close to the exhaust system and will deteriorate over time. If you have the proper tools and and access to a lift it should be fairly easy fix if you're mechanically inclined. I wouldn't recommend trying to do this without a lift though. You'll be doing quite a bit of work under the car and will need more room than a jack and jack stand can provide.
