Chrysler Repair: P0700 Code on 04 Chrysler 300m, obd scanner, solenoid pack

Question
QUESTION: I had check engine light come on and go into limp-in mode.  The code I pulled on it was P0700.  I have had some hesitation and jerkiness when shifting between park, reverse, and drive.  It the TCM codes pulled on the same OBD scanner or do I need a seperate reader.  Was wondering where do I go from here.

ANSWER: Hi Jody,
The 0700 typically is an 'alert' that another specific trans code is logged in the tcm memory. So if the readout was done via the odometer window, the best thing to do would be to get a readout with a plug-in reader. Get the other number, ask what it means, what they recommend and for how much. Then write back and we'll compare notes to the manual. You can often get a free readout at a nationwide parts store such as Autozone. If no other codes are revealed, then the possibility of a malfunctioning tcm has to be entertained.

QUESTION: Roland,

I pulled the other code off of the car, it is P1776.  With this code, do you have any more thoughts on what it might be.  Check engine light triggered as I was driving 65 mph down the road with no shifting being done by the transmission.

Thanks,

Jody

Answer
Hi Jody,
That code 1776 (in the absence of an additional code 1784) uniquely points to a problem in the valve body with the low-reverse switch valve. The valve body is accessible without removing the transmission but it does require dropping a pan on the bottom and removing the valve body for repair. So you could see if things get any better as weather warms but if not then doing the valve body repair is the solution. If the 1784 comes up too, then the possibility shifts toward the pressure switch/solenoid pack as the cause, again with the low-reverse section of that unit.
Removing and servicing the valve body is tricky so if you wanted to do it yourself you would want to have the pages from the service manual before starting. Let me know if you go that route and I can copy those off a CD and email them to you as attachements but I need to know your email address (tell me by a 'private' follow-up question).
