Answer
Hi Justin,
The trans controller has recognized a problem and has put it into 'limp in mode' which protects against further damage by only using one gear. You need to get a fault code readout from an independent shop with an OBD-I code reader that would plug into a blue socket at the left hand end of the dash (under the dash or behind a small door which is called the data link connecter). It has 6 pins, three on a side.
That readout will give one or more 2-digit numbers that are codes for what is the problem. This should cost less than $40 for the readout, and you might ask at an Autozone parts store is they have such a reader and will do it for free. But if they only have OBD-II readers that won't work.
Let me know the numbers and we'll go from there. You can ask the person who does the reading what do the codes mean? Based on the codes you will know what to do next. An independent transmission shop (not a frachise-type) would also be able to do the readout. But check with me before authorizing anything major as a repair.
