Chrysler Repair: intermittent shudder when accelerating/shifting, obd ii code reader, engine faults

Question
i have a w reg 2000 lx automatic neon which sometimes shudders on changing from 1st to 2nd and when accelerating through corners my local garage says its the torque converter but if it was would i not get an engine warning light? i have traction and abs lights on and believe this to be an abs sensor failed so what do you think could cause this shudder

Answer
Hi John,
I doubt it is the torque converter also. Because this is happening when torque requirements are changing it might be that one of the engine mounts is wearing out which causes the engine to shift position in response to the torque change and that is possibly being transmitted to the structure of the vehicle due to a fatigued engine mount. You could notice whether the engine rocks forward and back noticeably as you rev it up, and also when you try to start it.
On the abs/traction lights, I would get a fault code readout/fault description readout using the diagnostic connector under the dash by the steering column and an OBD-II code reader. You can get a free readout of any engine faults at some nationwide auto parts stores such as Autozone, in which case you would ask for the 4-digit code numbers and also ask whether there reader can access tha ABS control module for any faults that it has stored. If not, then go to an independent garage and ask for just the ABS readout which should be less than $40. That should give us an idea of what is ailing in that system. Based on the diagnostic results the necessary corrections should be clarified.
