Problem with the 2003 Town & Country
I have a 2003 Town and Country. I have Problem with Heater Control Panel. The Panel has Driver, Passenger and Rear Temprature Controls. On the Left it has Power and Auto Hi and Low Bottons. On the Right it has A/C Recycle and Rear window Defrost. At the bottom it had from left to right Front Fan, Rear System(rear control, off and Auto) and Choise of locations of air coming from the vents defrost, leg and defrost etc. I am unable to control the fan button to reduce the air inside the van. If I switch off the Power to the control unit, it starts to blow air through the defrost at full speed.............Any suggestions to fix this problem would be really appreciated........Thanks

ANSWER: Hi Ukesh,
That would likely be a defective 'blower motor resistor block' and it will only blow on high speed when that fails. You can get to the block by opening the glove box, squeeze inward on the sides of the box near the top edge which allows the box to drop down further without stopping in its usual full open position and that then allows you to see behind the box and notice a rectangular module with a couple of plugs that is retained by screws and mounted in the side panel of the AC/heater distribution box. Remove the plugs and the 2 screws on either side of the module and remove the block. Put a replacement in and reverse the process. That should restore the multiple speeds of the blower. If I misunderstand your problem please let me know. Thanks for the description of the unit.

QUESTION: Hi Roland,
Thank You very Much for the info......I will try to fix myself and let U know how things went. Does it have anything to do with the Overhead Cousel Temprature that keeps jumping from Deg C to Deg F and I am unable to set the service kms after the oil changes...........And to Day my Orange Engine Light up on DashBoard also...........This happened before and I had to change the Gas Cap and it was fine for a few days and today the Engine Light in the Dashboard came on again...........I do not know if all these are related or needs to be fixed seperately....But I would really appreciate Your expertise on these as well..........By the Way do U have any Idea how much the 'blower motor resistor block usually costs......I will let U know it went after I finis that portion.........Thanks and I really appreciateit.

ANSWER: I try to focus on one issue at a time, so let us deal with the resistor block. I believe it is in the range of $50.
On the engine light, the best thing to do there is to get a free readout of the memory of the engine/transmission/body computers which can be obtained at Autozone parts stores or perhaps another such nationwide franchise parts store. If not nearby, then ask independent garages how much they charge for a code readout (it should be about $40 or less). Always get the specific fault code number which is 4-digits and preceded by a single letter. So get the full code letter and 4 numbers for each code, then tell me what it is and we'll go from there.

QUESTION: Hi Roland,
Thank U for the Blower Motor Resistor Block....Your Precise description and Guidance aws very Helpful and the Heater Control Panel is back to normal operation...Thank You............I did stop by a garage and he read the engine light problem on the dash as P0135...He said it might need the Spark Plugs to be changed first before the Oxygen Sensor........and the Overhead consol temprature flactuation is due to Outside Temprature Sensor............Can U let me know where it is located......I am unable to Program the overhead consol for Next Oil change and keep track of my service times....it was so convenient till its gone..........Thank You once again for Your Time and Advise...I raelly appreciate it..........

Ukesh

Answer
Hi Ukesh,
I am pleased to learn of your successful repair of the blower.
That 0135 code reports a problem with the oxygen sensor's heater circut: either the heater is 'open' or one of two wires to it is 'open'. The mechanics suggestion doesn't seem relevant to that code because his theory would only be relevant if the heater and the sensor were functional. It takes some dismantling to gain access to the sensor, but I can email you the pages that show how it is done. Then you would check the wires to the disconnect plug and if those are alright put in a new sensor. I need to know your email address to do that as the 'experts' don't see that information with your question.
On the overhead unit, there are several different such units, but I doubt that this issue is related to the external temp sensor but rather to something in the electronics or power/ground source. So if you can describe it better (what are all the features, and the one about oil changing notification) I should be able to direct you toward what is the problem overall. What features work and what don't?
