Chrysler Repair: 96 chrysler cirrus no start, chrysler cirrus, crank sensor

Question
Hi, I have a 96 Chrysler cirrus 2.5 v6 with 157k on it. i bought it from a friend, he parked it 2-3 yrs ago. it started, seemed to run maybe a little rough. drove it home 2 hours away. almost made it, but it stalled on the interstate. wont start, and there is no spark. it is getting fuel... i think it is the distributor. there are supposedly two bolts holding the distributor down, i removed 4 nuts/bolts. it still will not come off. im a strong man, and it wont budge...after searching the net, it seems to indicate you have to remove the rotor, etc. I have no clue on how to do this, especially how to remove the rotor, or how to test the rotor distributor coil and crank sensor (believe its the one located with the dist.) once its out of the car. (I checked for spark by removing a plug and putting it back on the boot... cranked the engine several times, and only saw one spark...)any advice is appreciated... thank you!

Answer
Hi Jayson,
Try for fault codes using the ignition key:"on-off-on-off-on and leave on" doing that in 5 seconds or less elapsed time. Then watch the check engine light, which remains 'on', to see it begin to flash, pause, flash, etc. Count the number of flashes before each pause. Then repeat to be sure or an accurate set of flash counts.
Then group the counts in order of appearance to form the 2-digit fault codes. An 11 code means the crank sensor is bad (located behind the engine at the seam between the engine and the transmission) while a 54 code means the cam sensor in the distributor is bad (which unfortunately calls for a new/rebuilt distributor to replace it). The 55 code at the end means "end of readout".
Let me know if you get the 54 code and I can tell you the steps for removing the distributor.

PS Sorry for the delay but I just found your question in the 'pool'.
