Chrysler Repair: Acclaim acceleration Problem, fuel pump relay, diagnostic capability

Question
Hello,

My girlfriends dad has a 1990 Something Acclaim and is having a problem with it. I threw out a few ideas but I wanted to ask an expert before I start tinkering with his ride.

Here is the deal...

While driving down the freeway at about 55 MPH he claims that it 'chugs' as if it is not getting enough fuel. From what he described it sounded to me like what happens when a throttle positioning sensor goes out. but it happens off and on, and only going around a steady 55. Thinking maybe something with the fuel pump relay or something?

Thank you for your time.

Charlie

Answer
Hi Charlie,
You alsways want to take advantage of the self-diagnostic capability of the vehicle. Use the ignition key:"on-off-on-off-on and leave on" doing that in 5 seconds or less elapsed time. Then watch the 'check engine' light which remains 'on', to see it begin to flash, pause, flash, etc. Count the number of flashes before each pause. Then repeat the process to be sure of an accurate set of flash counts. Then tell me the results and we'll go from there.
Tell me the letter in the 10th position of the VIN as that will tell me what year we have here. Also, mention which engine (L) is in the vehicle.
Thanks,
Roland
