Chrysler Repair: Starter motor 3.3L engine, solenoid switch, starter motor

Question
What tools will I need to remove the starter motor and how long should it take.
The starter keeps turning after the engine starts up and after it is switched off, does that sound as if that would require a new starter?

thank you bryan

Answer
Hi Bryan,
It would help if I knew what vehicle (year/model) the 3.3L engine is mounted in so I can tell you what needs to be done to remove the starter motor.
The switch that has to deactivate when you release the key is the 'solenoid switch' mounted directly on the starter motor proper. It is possible to remove the starter and replace the solenoid switch only if you can get it as a separate part. You could check with the dealer parts department or a parts store, or starter motor rebuilding shop. That might be worth a try rather than to buy an entire rebuilt starter motor if the motor otherwise cranks well.
I assume that it is not the starter motor relay which is responsible for activating the solenoid switch that is causing the run-on condition; but that might be the issue and which you could eliminate by switching out the starter motor relay with another relay that has the same part number in you powerbox containging several relays. If the run-on still occurs, then it is the solenoid switch for sure (except for the very unlikely probablility that the ignition switch itself is faulty at the 'start' contacts inside the switch).
The solenoid switch is what connects the battery directly to the starter motor windings so if it fails to 'open' when the starter relay 'opens' you get this problem.
