Chrysler Repair: Clicking noise from front wheel when braking, warped rotors, cv joint

Question
My son just purchased a used 2008 Chrysler T&C minivan with 31.5K miles.  The vehicle makes a clicking noise that corresponds with the vehicle speed.  It is only noticeable when braking from approximately 30mph.  The noise seems worse when the vehicle is warmed up, and sounds like it's coming from the right front wheel.

I removed the right front wheel and removed the caliper assembly and brake pads.  All seem in good shape.  After reassembly, the clicking is still there.  Brakes work well, no vibration from warped rotors.

I'm suspicious that it may be a bad CV joint, although both boots on the passenger side are not torn or leaking grease.  I'd appreciate any advice.

Thanks,
Bob

Answer
Hi Bob,
Clicking like that is often associated with a cv joint. The outer is likely to loose it grease/tear, and due to the flexing required when turning the clicking can be exacerbated by turning while in motion. I have heard clicking however when going straight ahead when a joint is low on grease as well, and usually it is louder when accelerating rather than decelerating. I can't suggest a brake related click and that is reinforced by your having removed the caliper and checked the pads.  Also, you would want there to be a light lubrication of the caliper pins with silicone to reduce what is called chirping, rather than clicking.
I hope this is helpful.

PS Thanks for the rating/nomination. Do take a look at the inside and outside edges of the cv-boot as it is possible for the grease to leak out an end without there being a frank tear in the boot. You might see a tell-tale trace on the adjacent chassis area. And notice if the clicking loudness changes when turning to the left or right when braking. All those would point to a 'dry' joint. You can add cv-joint grease to the joint by releaing one of the clamps and injecting it in. Have a new clamp ready to reseal the boot in place. I have done that successfully.
