Chrysler Repair: starter rmoval: 98 Neon, dodge neon, clearance problem

Question
I have a 1998 dodge neon.  We are trying to take it out and was told there are 2 bolts.  Where are these bolts located to take out the starter.

Answer
Hi Lillian,
The bolts are located at the flange on the engine to which the starter is mechanically attached. The bolts enter that flange from the transmission side of the flange so the threaeded ends are going toward the passenger side of the car and the bolt heads face the driver side of the car. This is all on the side of the engine that is closer to the front of the car and would be accessible from under the car by jacking up either front wheel, possibly the driver's side wheel would be the better choice to raise. For safety, support the vehicle on a jack stand after you raise it up. The starter is of course round where it attaches to the flange, but it has a coupe of 'ears' with holes for the bolts, and the bolts would be a 12 o'clock and 6 o'clock.
My '97 manual (which may not be accurate for your '98) suggests that if the vehicle has air conditioning that it would be very helpful (possibly necessary?) that the engine mount (which attaches the engine to the adjacent chassis crossmember nearby to the starter) have its connecting bolt removed so that the engine can be rotated (downward, toward the front of the car) in order to more easily remove the starter. So if there is not enough clearance to remove the starter that would be the thing to do. It is done by using a floor jack to support the engine at its oil pan, then remove the mount bolt, then slightly lower the engine by releasing momentarily the hydraulic valve on the floor jack and rotate then engine by hand so as to help in the clearance problem. After the starter is installed you would raise the floor jack to its original position and insert the mount bolt and secure it in place to reestablish the integrity of the engine mount.
If you would like a copy of the page that showx this I can xerox it and postal mail it to you. Just tell me a mailing address.
