Chrysler Repair: 00 Neon overheating: temp sensor/fan fuses, coolant temp, engine coolant

Question
2.0 motor Had a problem with overheating. Changed the thermostat and added lost coolant. Now it boils in the overflow tank, fan doesn't switch on when car is idling. Thinking that it is a temperature switch but can't find one?

Answer
Hi Anthony,
The fan fuses are #6 (30 amp) in the box under the hood and #10 (15 amp) under the dash (based on my '01 manual which I believe is applicable to your '00 but it may not; instead you would check fuse #5 (30 amp) in the box under the hood and #10 under the dash). The fan is supposed to come on whenever you activate the AC, and without the AC it will come on at 210F to 220F depending upon whether you are going over or under 40 mph.
The engine coolant temp sensor on the 2.0 is on rear of the cylinder head next to the cam position sensor on its right and the heater hoses above and to the left. It has a tan/black and black/light blue wire. Its resistance should drop as the coolant temp rises. To change it, drain a couple of quarts of coolant so the level is below that of the sensor, then remove and put in a new one torqueing it to 14 foot-pounds. Then attach its plug and refill the system.
