Chrysler Repair: blower air distribution selector: 98 Sebring, chrysler sebring, distribution choices

Question
98 Chrysler Sebring Convertable my question is how do I fix where my air from the blower comes out. It blowes fine thru defrost but has trouble with making it fully to dash only. I know u r busy and thanks in advance. My wife is cooking alive in her car.

Answer
Hi Tom,
There is a 'mode' door in the unit that changes the air distribution. It is powered by a small motor called the mode door actuator which is controlled electrically by the body computer that interacts with the heater/ac control panel. It may be that the actuator is no longer working or that the door(s) that it moves are mechanically binding. The actuator and its associated gearing are located on the left end of the under dash unit.
The first thing to try is 're-calibration' of the door actuator. That is done by removing fuse 5 in the fuse box located behind the left end of the dash behind the end cap. Take it out for a couple of minutes, then put it back in and thereafter the unit will try a re-calibration which may correct the problem.
If not, then remove the panel on the lower side of the dash on the driver-side to get a look at the end of the unit. The actuator has a cable to identify it. You can watch its motion as you request different air distribution choices. If it is not moving then it is probably in need of replacement which involve simply removing the screws that hold it in place and the connector for the cable. Note the location of the 'key' as you will want to reconnect that key to the door lever hidden inside.
Let me know if you have any further questions.
Roland
PS Sorry for the delay but I just found your question in the 'pool' to which it has been referred by the other expert. Please "rate" my answer, and where you see the question about 'volunteer of the month' consider a 'yes' answer if you find this response helpful. Thanks

Hi Tom,
Great to hear from you and learn that things worked out. Thanks for the rating/nomination/kind remarks.
