Chrysler Repair: 94-97 LHS,New Yorker, Concorde fuel gauge, 1995 chrysler concorde, chrysler concorde

Question
QUESTION: I have a 1995 chrysler concorde with 3.5 engine. My fuel gauge seems to be acting up.Whe it gets below 1/2 tank the fuel gauge will drop to empyty and the fuel light will come on.It will fluctuate up and down when below 1/2 tank.I ran a code search and it came up with a 32 code.If it is the fuel gauge sending unit?Where is it located and how do I change it?

ANSWER: Hi Dave,
The chances are the variable resistor element of the level sensor is not making good contact any longer because when its contact is broken it behaves as if it is empty. The 32 code is saying that your egr valve is not responding as it should so you might want to check that out as a separate issue. Chances are its valve stem is just sticky and can be corrected by spraying some WD-40 on the stem where it enters the body of the egr valve.
You can verify that the level sensor is flakey by monitoring the resistance to ground on the dark blue wire that comes to pin 23 of the gray connector of the body computer (located behind the kick panel on the passenger side (just in front of the door opening: remove trim panel and pull carpeting back, then cut cloth of dash 'liner' to access bcm).
Or you can remove the access port lid in the front bottom of the trunk to get to the top of the fuel tank where you will find a 4-wire (5-pin) natural color plug with that same dark blue wire on one of the pins (pin 2 or 4 depending upon how you count). If you measure the resistance of that pin/wire to ground it should be between 20 ohms (full)....500 ohms (half)...1,000 ohm (empty) but never greater than that. If you find it 'open' when the gauge is showing fals empthy then indeed that is why. You have to remove the fuel pump module to access the sensor for replacement. There are several pages in the manual that describe the process which I can xerox and postal mail to you. Tell me a postal mailing address.

QUESTION: Thank you, also where is the valve stem on the egr valve at?I have the 3.5 motor,1995 chrysler concorde. My mailing address is David Malpeso,1216 white pine drive wellington,fl 33414.Thanks for the help.As far as the 32 code, the check engine light came on testerday while driving but once I shut the car off and started again,it hasnt come on again.the engine seems to be running okay.Just a little rough idling.not that rough though.

Answer
Hi David,
Here is the details on the egr:
"I would take a look at the exhaust gas recirculation valve which is located behind the engine near the air intake throttle valve. It is mounted in a pipe that runs between passenger side exhaust manifold and the air intake manifold. The valve is mounted horizontally and has a valve stem between its round vacuum actuator top and the body of the valve attached to the pipe, inside the flange that connects the two parts. The stem has a slot into which you can insert the tip of a flat-bladed screwdriver so as to lever the stem back and forth against spring action which should move freely and close tightly. If the stem seems to be sticky so that stem doesn't close all the way by spring action, then you can try spraying some penetrating solvent like WD-40 on the valve stem to freeup its motion.
If the valve is sticking slightly ajar it will make for a rough idle and poor acceleration such as you describe because the mixture is too dilute. It is one of the most common causes of this symptom. So see if you can find the valve and check/lubricate the stem. To check it in motion you can rev the engine from idle to 2500 rpm and back to idle and watch to see if the valve stem moves freely in both directions to the extreme open and closed positions. It may be that the interior of the valve is cruddy so that might require that it be unbolted from the pipe where it it attached and cleaned."
I will send the pages.
