Chrysler Repair: 00 Sebring: new starter but no action, chrysler sebring lxi, solenoid switch

Question
Hi Roland I have a 2000 chrysler sebring lxi 2.5L. We just replaced the starter but there isn't any power going to the starter. There is the clicking noise from the relay. Do you know what the problem could be.

Answer
Hi Randy,
The starter relay clicking indicates that everything is 'go' for the starter to respond. All you need is fuse 8 (20 amp) in the box under the hood to be good, the contact points in the relay to to conduct the current from fuse 8 out on a brown wire to the solenoid switch on the starter motor, the fat red wire from the battery to be connected to the motor, and good connections at the battery clamps to conduct the large amount of current that the motor will draw. Maybe fuse 8 has a subtle crack in its wire that isn't noticeable, or it could be blown. You can switch the starter relay with another one of the same part number somewhere else in the power box, and you can verify that the 12v is getting to the solenoid switch on the starter when the starter relay clicks. The fact that you don't hear the louder click from that solenoid makes me suspect fuse 8 as the culprit. #8 is the outboard-most fuse in the 4th row of small fuses counting from the front of the box.

Ooops! The LXi is the coupe model, correct? If that is the case then the 'fuse' in question is a 'fuse like' device called a 'fusible link' in the power box under hood, #3, far right, top row, 30 amp. The wire out from the relay is black/yellow and the fat wire from the battery is black/red. Otherwise the same situation as described above for the JXI (convertible). So check that fusible link to start with.
