Chrysler Repair: 96 Voyager speedo/tach work intermittently, intermittent connection, cluster design

Question
Roland,
I've done your suggested system test for the Voyager cluster.  I get the 999 code, the lights dim, both the speedo and tach go smoothly through the test and the odometer/transmission lights do also.  There were no other error codes to be seen.  The test did not, unfortunately clear up the intermittent tach/speedo failure.  There is no roughness etc with the transmission while driving.  I've read another of your posts that suggests a cracked solder join in a circuit board.  Is this the next step in tracking down my Voyager's ailment?  If I need to expose this board, is there a diagram of where it is located, and the steps to take the instrument panel/coverings apart?  I'm writing from Australia, so my access to a shop manual is nill.  Thank you.

Answer
Hi John,
Because the speedo/tach are intermittent (simultaneously I presume?) I do suspect that the digital data 'bus' connections to the cluster that comes from the body computer has an intermittent connection, perhaps on the cluster circuit board proper. Once you have the cluster removed you will notice the socket on the back side through which all the power and the data come into it. That socket has metal wires on each of the plug pins that are soldered into a hole in the circuit board. That pin/circuit board solder joint interface (one for each pin) is the suspect. Because you hav a '96 export vehicle I am not certain which cluster you have. I assume it is an electronic cluster (digital readout) but I need also to know if the surround of the cluster is rectangular or curved/oval in shape. The cluster design changed between '95 and '98 which are the two manuals I have. So depending upon that, the detail removal procedure may be different. So let me know that and I can then give you the specifics for removal and for which pins to pay particular attention to.
