Chrysler Repair: P0406 code, egr solenoid, exhaust gas recirculation valve

Question
My check engine light has bee on about a week. Had it checked and the code po406 appeared. What does it mean and will that be a costly repair.

Answer
Hi Sam,
The 0406 means that the circuit or device part that verifies the operational position of the exhaust gas recirculation valve is outside of its normal operting voltage range (too high). The egr is a pollution reducing device and thus its function is monitored and if abnormal will set a fault code. The part that verifies the positon is the 'egr solenoid' which is not an expensive part. I would guess it as under $50. And installing it would be similiarly minimal. It is possible that the cause of the higher than expected voltage is a short in the signal wire to a 12v or 5v wire in the same harness, which can be checked with a voltmeter. So I would look at the hareness for any signs of damaged insulation in the wires that go to that solenoid first. Absent that, replacing the solenoid will probably correct the problem.
If you want some help on how to check this out personally tell me the year/model/engine size.
If it is an egr valve with the solenoid intergral with the valve, and the solenoid position sensor has failed, then the cost of the part (the egr valve including solenoid) may be higher than listed above unless the valve and the solenoid are sold as separate parts. Installation is not a major job, probably an hour or less in most cases.
