Chrysler Repair: 96 Town & Country LXi 3.8 Trans Solenoid, solenoid pack, fuel mixture

Question
QUESTION: I just bought this van and new that it needed a transmission solenoid. It wouldn't go into 3rd gear.  So I replaced the solenoid and it still does the same thing.  Stopped by Advance Auto to check the codes and it has 0140, 0765, and 0300.  I know the codes are for shift solenoid D, the o2 sensor and misfire.  What else could throw the 0765 code? And do you think replacing the o2 sensor will fix the misfire?  Thank you so much!!

Jeremy

ANSWER: Hi Jeremy
According to the manual the problem is either the underdrive solenoid (which is part of the solenoid pack), the wire connecting it to the trans controller, or the transcontroller itself, or the trans controller ground connection. You could verify that both of the ground wires on pins 53 and 57 of the controller are indeed grounded, and you could check the solenoid wire from the solenoid pack plug's pin 5 to the trans control plug pin 59 for continuity.
The O2 sensor is probably not the cause of the misfire as it just says there is no signal from the sensor, and it would probably not in and of itself cause misfiring. It doesn't come into play until the engine warms up. There are a great many possible causes of multiple misfires including plugs, coil pack, wires, fuel mixture (injectors/pressure), the egr valve being stuck slightly ajar (that is what I would start with first to check). Those would be my suggestions.

QUESTION: Ok. I checked all of the terminals for ground and continuity. Do you assume its the control module since all of those checked out?

Thanks!

ANSWER: Hi Jeremy,
When you said originally thay you "replaced the solenoid", does that mean you actually replaced the solenoid pack on the transmission*? If so, then the remaining possibility is the tcm. But if the original UD solenoid is still in the original solenoid pack and you didn't check it out, then I would recommend removing the pack and either servicing the UD solenoid or putting in a new pack. What I have listed is exactly the set of repair possibilities that is outlined for solution of the 0765 code, if that code is still present.

*The 'UD Solenoid' is not the same as the 'Transmission Relay'...which is perhaps what you replaced? That would have been a simple plug and play repair but not what is required.

QUESTION: So, this morning it didn't try to shift into third like it usually does.  I went and got the control module anyway, and nothing.  It doesn't try to shift into third any more at all. It used to attempt to once or twice before it went into "limp mode".  Is there something else I can do to reset it or something?  I SO greatly appreciate all your help with this.

Thank you,

Jeremy

Answer
Hi Jeremy,
Sorry to learn there was no improvement. I wonder whether it started in first and then shifted to second, or does it just start in second only? One explanation for that could be a faulty transmission relay in the power box that is under the hood. It is the third from the rear and you can switch it with the fuel pump or ASD relay if of the same part number just to see if something improves or changes. Check the continuity between pin socket 87 of the trans relay (which is the middle, side to side, of the socket) and pins 16 and 17 of the tcm plug. If one of those connections were flaky it would cause a default to limp-mode.
Then you could try disconnecting the battery for a minute to erase stored codes, and driving it for a bit and see if the 0765 code is still there or not or perhaps a different code. It seems as if you have tried all the fixes for that specific code. When testing for continuity did you try shaking the harness while reading you meter, just in case it is an intermittent sort of 'open' which happens when the vehicle is in motion? How does the condition of the harness between the trans plug and the tcm appear?
