Chrysler Repair: Transmission codes, loose bolts, speed sensors

Question
My 2000 chrysler automatic 300m's check engine light came on. the codes it gave are p178 po731 po732 po700 po740 p1781....what couls this mean????

Answer
Hi Sandra,
I don't find a 178, is that a typo?
The 1781 means one of the pressure switches (for the overdrive clutch) is not in the correct position in relation to the gear that is called upon. If could be an error in its sensor, of the switch may not be working properly, or the valve body inside the trans may have loose bolts, or the filter inside the trans could be clogged, of the trans contoller may be defective.
The 0731,0732  mean that two of the clutches in the transmission are slipping, unless there is also a 0715 or 0720 which would mean one of the speed sensors is bad, rather than a clutch, but those are not present, unfortunately because that would be an very inexpensive fix.
O740 points to a problem with the torque converter or the fluid pump...both should be replaced.
O700 is just a catch all to tell you to look for the other 700 series codes
The overall picture leads me to believe that the transmission needs to be rebuilt. I suppose that is what you were told? I wish it weren't so bleak. Did you verify that you have sufficient transmission fluid on the dip stick for the transmission? Were that way below level it might help to fill it up with ATF +4 fluid, drive it, and see if all or some of the codes disappear. Otherwise, a rebuild is the only likely cure. But if you have a trusted transmission shop get a second opinion.
