Chrysler Repair: Shifting into neutral spontaneously, question pool, appreciative thanks

Question
I have a 98 Town and Country.  Sometimes when I go to try to start it up, it takes 2 or 3 times to get it to start.  Not a big issue, but the big thing is after it is started withing the first two minutes of driving it, it will automatically switch into neutral 1 or 2 times on me.  For it to go back into drive I either have to wait 10 to 15 seconds or bring the rpm's up high.  Have you heard of this or do you have any suggestions?

Answer
Brandon,
I would believe that this may be a mechanical issue with the cable between the shift lever in the cabin and the vertical rod at the transmission which it moves to change the gear setting. It may be that the adjustment is not quite right, which is related to the position of the cable's outer casing where it is clamped at the transmission being loose or not exactly "centered" in comparison to the detent positions of the shifter lever.  If P and N starting positions are reliable for getting the starter to respond to the key, then that may not be the reason. The other possibility is that one of the engine mounts that hold the engine to the frame is fatigued such that the engine is moving from side to side enough that the effective length of the shift cable is changing enough to pull it from D into N. You could watch while a helper rev's the engine in neutral to see how far the engine tilts back and forth as an indication of that possibility.

PS Sorry for the delay in answering your question as I just found it in the 'question' pool.
Please 'rate' my answer and where you see the question about nomination if you would consider a 'yes' to that I would be appreciative. Thanks
