Chrysler Repair: 1998 Chrysler Sebring JXI Conv Transmission Locked 1st Gear., chrysler sebring jxi, 4 digit numbers

I was driving today and when I came to a stop the Transmission disengaged to Neutral then abruptly kicked into gear.  As I started driving again I heard a scraping noise. (Metal on Metal, I know not good, right?)  It went away as I accelerated.  Then as I came to a stop again the Whole thing locked up.  Would not engage Drive, Reverse or even Neutral.  I switched it in to Auto Stick mode and finally got the car moving by shifting it into 3rd gear. (2nd had the same grinding noise I heard before it locked up).

Got Home checked fluids all full.  Will I need a new Transmission at this point?
Any other ideas?

Hi Nate,
In general noises are not a good sign. Go to an Autozone parts store and ask for a free fault code readout which will give you some indication of what is wrong. These are 4-digit numbers. Let me know what they are and we can go from there with much better information.
