Chrysler Repair: 96 minivan; 3.8L cam/crank sensors, crankshaft sensor, crank sensor

Question
QUESTION: OK Roland my engine is a 3.8, so here is whats happening now my husband up plugged something don't know put it back and the car started running, he drove it around the corner and back and without him cutting it off it cut off. He said this happened a couple times he says it cuts it self he lets sit then it starts back up but after a while it start to sputter and cuts off.

ANSWER: Hi Inell,
I can only suggest that the cam or crank sensor may be breaking down when it heats up, then recovers when cool. That might not set a code until it gets worse. But that is just a guess on my part. How about the code result question? Ask him what was plugged/unplugged.

QUESTION: Hey Roland where is the Cam sensor located? is it in the transmission?

Answer
Hi Inell,
The cam sensor is on the front of the engine, inserted into the chain case cover near the thermostat housing, and below the fuel rail that is nearby. There is a single bolt that holds it in place and an access hole in the accessory bracket to that bolt. There is an o-ring that may hold it tightly, so don't pull on its wire to remove it, rather tap it lightly to release the grip in the chain case cover.
When installing a new sensor make sure the paper spacer is on its tip and put a few drops of oil on the o-ring. Put it in the chain case cover and rotate it into position and press down on it so the tip touches the hidden metal surface of the cam. Hold it in contact and then tighten the bolt that holds it in place.
The sensor that is at the rear of the engine, just above the transmission differential housing on the side close to the firewall is the crankshaft sensor.

PS: When you mention a 'used' sensor, that might be the cause of the problem. The sensor itself actually isn't supposed to touch the surface of the spinning plate, but rather be removed by a fraction of an inch. Therefor it comes with a paper spacer stuck to  its tip that is just that proper spacing. It is worn away but leave the actual tip at just the correct spacing. If the used one didn't have a new paper spacer put on it, then it could have been damaged if too close, or it could be too far from the surface if the installer was concerned about it not coming into contact.
