Chrysler Repair: dodge dynasty 1992: starter just spins?, crankshaft pulley, dodge dynasty

Question
placed key in the ignition, the lights and everything come on but the key just spins. the vehicle wont start.

Answer
Hi Agelia,
By the "key just spins" do you mean the key, or do you mean the starter motor? If you mean that you hear the starter motor spinning but not engaging the flywheel, so the engine is not being cranked, then it could either be that:
the battery is weak such that the spining gear that makes that engagement by pushing against a spring is not being rotated rapidly enough (so you might try charging the battery or getting a jump from another car),
the gear device (called a 'bendix unit') has become defective (which means a rebuilt starter motor is needed),
or that the teeth on the flywheel are a bit worn where they now sit and then you would want to rotate the crankshaft a few degrees by means of a socket and handle applied in the clockwise direction to the bolt on the crankshaft pulley at the front of the engine.
Any of those remedies may work for you so try the one that is easiest to accomplish first, them move on to the rest.
