Chrysler Repair: 1997 Sebring trans 2.5L: code 0732, transmission controller, eddie miller

Question
QUESTION: Roland, Thanks for being available. I have a 1997 Sebring Convertible w/ 2.5 liter V6 @ 168,000 miles starts quiet and runs smooth.
Warmed up it takes of fine, easy or hard on gas, when it goes to shift to 2nd it just tachs up as it is in neutral. I have to come to a complete stop and put it in reverse before it will go back in first to go forward again.
any ideas? Fluid was clean, I changed it and the filters anyway (ATF+4). Shift pack? TMC? or....?
Thanks for the help.

ANSWER: Hi Eddie,
I would try to get a code readout of the transmission controller via the plug under the dash near the steering column. An Autozone parts store will often do that for free. If not nearby, then an independent shop shouldn't charge more than $40. Get all the 4-digit code numbers and then write back and we'll check it out against the manual. The 0700's are the codes relevant to the trans, get them all.  That is the best way to proceed.

Got the codes. P0700 and P0732
These are all the codes.
Thanks for your help.

Answer
Hi Eddie,
The 0700 is a generic code that simply alerts you to look for a specific trans code, in this case the 0732. That code says there is excessive slippage in 2nd gear, which is consistent with your observation. The only possible alternatives to there being internal damage of the clutches for that gear is a shift lever position being out of adjustment (put the shift in Park, then remove attachment of cable to lever at the transmission and verify that the two mate together smoothly; if not then adjust cable adjust nut at in-cabin shifter so they do mate). The verification of the clutch being the issue would be to measure the clutch volume index for the 1-2 shift which should be in the range of 20-77, and not larger. That would be a shop test. But unless something is found to be out of adjustment this code points to a need to remove and open the transmission and focus first on the underdrive and 2/4 clutches for repair, and inspect the internal oil pump.
