Question
2002 crystler sebring convertable .Hi i just had my water pump replaced because the coolant was leaking. now it has been three weeks and it still leaks.i did fill it to the max line with coolant and when i took it back to the mechanic he said i filled it to much and it would continue to leak until it reaches the level its supposed to be.is that right

Answer
Hi Dave,
If this is the 2.7L engine, then the filler bottle has two sections, one is really part of the cooling system and it becomes pressurized, and the other section is for overflow from the first section. I don't know if what the mechanic said is true, only time will tell.
It might be that the pressure relief cap on the  filler bottle is not relieving the pressure in the system when the engine warms up which would raise the pressure possibly to the point of causing the coolant to leak from the pump. Where is the leak appearing: from the front of the engine or the rear?
The engine/pump system is designed with two 'weep' holes from which small amounts of coolant may routinely be released, one opening is at the lower edge of the thermostat housing at the front of the engine and one behind the pump where the effluent runs along the top of the engine (between the two cylinder blocks) and then out the rear of the engind at the end of that channel.
When the pump is put in, it is important to be sure that the weep hole that drains out at the thermostat housing is not clogged. So maybe ask the mechanic to try and insert a stiff wire into the weep hole to possibly clear away any blockage. But in any case, if the loss of coolant is not really modest, then I think something is wrong with the repair job that needs to be investigated and repaired.
