Chrysler Repair: 1989 Dodge RAM 50 (AWT273 trans.) problem., adjustment screw, vacuum hose

Question
I was recently changing the fuel pump on my 1989 Dodge Ram 50 (AWT372 transmission).  During that replacement I had to remove the carb, the valve cover,  and also the thermostat housing.  Now when I drive the truck, it doesn't want to downshift (kickdown under acceleration) and it upshifts too early.  Can you please give me an idea what might be wrong?  Before this problem, the transmission worked absolutely perfectly!  Could I have disturbed an electrical connection, a vacuum hose, or a cable connection when working on the fuel pump (located right beside the carb)?

Your help is greatly appreciated.

Dan

Answer
Hi Dan,
I don't have the manual for that truck vehicle, but if it is similar to cars of that vintage I would suggest that you inspect the rod that runs from the throttle actuation mechanism and that connects to the  transmission shifter rod at the transmission, specifically there may be a 'swivel adjustment screw' which when released will allow you to adjust the position of the spring loaded connecting rod between the throttle mechanism and transmission shifter. It should be able to move freely, and then lock the screw. You might find a position of the adjustment that returns things back to normal. I may be way off base for lack of a manual but that is the best I can do as trucka are not my area of expertise.
