Motorcycle Repair: 2002 Harley Dyna Super Glide charging problem, harley dyna, ac volts

Question
QUESTION: I have a 2002 Dyna Super Glide.  The battery looses charge when the engine is running.  The red light never comes on.  I could go maybe 20-30 miles before I had a problem.  I replace the voltage regulator.  I've done this one time before 1 1/2 years ago.  Seems Harley has a service bulletin I just found out about.  Oil follows the wire from the stator to the voltage regulator plug and shorts the voltage regulator out.  Last time the plug was full of oil so I replaced the voltage regulator and it fixed the problem.  Same problem again so I replace the voltage regulator and this time the battery is not charging right.  Might raise the voltage .04 with the engine running fast over idle but never goes as the high as the volts are when the engine is not running.  Is this the stator?  Is there a test I can do to check the stator?  Hate to keep buying parts.  Maybe the voltage regulator I bought wasn't needed or I might have 2 bad parts or maybe the voltage regulator I bought is bad not sure?

Thanks,

Philip

ANSWER: You need to test your stator. First, do a OHMs test on the stator wires. From one wire to ground, with the regulator unplugged, you should show no OHMs do the same to the other wire. Next, start the bike and at the wires from the stator you should get around 60 AC volts at around 2000 RPMs. If it doesnt pass the above tests then its bad
Good luck and happy riding

QUESTION: What setting should I have the ohms on the multi meter set at it goes from 2000k to 200.  Also do both the ohms have to show 0 and output need to be 60 AC for the stator to be bad or can one of the tests indicate a bad stator?

Do you know of a way to test the voltage regulator?

Thanks,

Philip

Answer
for the OHMs use the lowest setting. Yes, they have to show no OHMs. If they do then it means it grounded and bad. On the AC volts it needs to be around 60 volts. If not, then its bad
There is no test for the regulator.
Good luck and happy riding
