Hi Michael,
There is one 'trick' you need to know about when re-filling the cooling system on these 4 cyl engines from the '80's and '90's. The box where the thermostat is located has to be vented to the atmosphere when you fill the system so that coolant rises to the top of the box. At that point you close the box and continue filling the system.
There is a plug on the top of the box which comes off with an 8 mm allen wrench for the venting process. So drain and collect about 2 quarts of fluid from the radiator, then remove the plug pm top of the box, then refill the system until you get coolant to rise up to the top hole of the box, then put the plug back (put some grease/oil on the threads so it doesn't rust in place), then fill the system the rest of the way.
When you have air trapped in the box, then the coolant won't flow through it and then the thermostat won't open properly. That is your problem.
