Chrysler Repair: 88 LeBaron: code 24, digital dash goes dark, variable illumination, marker switch

Question
QUESTION: The check engine light came on the other day, displaying code 24, but the check engine wasn't on today. I have the car for two weeks now and the idle is high and/or rough at startup, it needs few miles to stabilize at a normal RPM. I didn't had time to open the hood yet, and I'm a mechanic but I don't have access to tech info on old Chrysler models. What are the wires and the specs for the TPS/IAC?

I also have problems with the digital dash. It seems to be common problem that the dash dims to black while driving. Is there any way to correct this?

ANSWER: Hi Patryck,
I have to assume you have the J-body convert/coupe, not the H-body gts. If otherwise let me know. Also, I assume you have a turbo I or II engine, otherwise let me know.
The tps is a three wire connector: black/light blue is ground to pin 4 of the smec, violet/white is 5v supply to pin 13, and orange/dark blue is the variable signal to pin 22. The signal wire should vary resistance reading smoothly when compared to either of the other two wires of the sensor (when unplugged, of course).  The IAC is two coils, 4 pins, the two outer are connected together as are the two innner, at the plug. The wires are connected to pins 18/19 (outer) and to pins 17/20 (inner) at the smec. The colors in order listed are: yellow/black, gray/red, brown trace, and violet/black.
The proper dimming of the digital dash requires both a marker signal(yellow/orange from pin F)  and a variable illumination signal (orange) from pin I and via fuse 12, both from the headlamp switch. These arrive at the cluster on pins 6 and 10 respectively.
It may be that the marker switch in the headlamp switch is flaky. It should be 'open' when the knob is rotated to one position between pins F and G of the switch, and 'closed' in the other two rotation positions. The illumination can either be variable when the headlamps are on, or at full intensity when the headlamps are on (for driving daytime with headlamps on).
There is an internal self-test of the cluster done as follows: press and hold trip/trip reset buttons simultaneously, then turn on ignition, then release buttons. Odometer should display EIC.
Then press US/MET button. 5 should display. Press US/MET again 6 should display. Press again 7 should display. Press US/MET again, 8 should display.  Between the press and the number displaying in the odometer window various parts of the cluster will be displaying. If on one of the tests nothing occurs, then let me know. If you get to 8 press US/MET again to return to normal cluster function. I haven't heard of a 'fix' for spontaneous dimming, nor heard of that before, but check out the connections/switch as I described.

QUESTION: I do have the K-sedan model with the 2.2L TBI engine.
For the dash, with lights off, i.e. full intensity, or on at full intensity, the main sections just dim to almost black, so I play with the dimming knob back and forth then back to full, but it turn black again in seconds...

Answer
How does it go when the headlights are 'On'? If that is OK then I would suspect that marker section of the headlamp switch which has three positions as not making good contact. The electronic cluster works similarly in the GTS sedan except that the two wires I described are on pins 5 and 6 of the red connector at the cluster. Also, to run the self-diagnostic you have to press simultaneously as described but CHEC should appear, then keep pressing the US/MET to cycle through several tests. Let me know if something suspicious shows up. There are several possibilities along the way that I can't go into detail here about. I could copy the 2 pages that show the expected and fault test results and postal mail them to you.
