Chrysler Repair: jammed gear shift, pawl, trans fluid

Question
Hey I have a 2007 Chrysler sabring. This morning after i started up the car up, it would not go in gear. I had my foot on the brake and nothing. It would not move. What's wrong and is it easy or simple to fix?

Answer
Hi Chris,
If you are parked on a slant, then if what you are saying is that the gear shifter won't move, then you might ask some energetic helpers to push the vehicle against the direction of the slant in order to relieve the bind-up of the parking pawl inside the transmission which can happen when you are on an incline and put it in Park. Relieving the pressure on the pawl will allow it to move and release the lever.
If you mean that you got it out of Park but it won't move ('go in gear'):
First make sure you have the proper level of trans fluid in the transmission. Use only ATF+4 if needed and don't overfill it. Then use the ignition key:"on-off-on-off-on and leave on" doing that in 5 seconds or less elapsed time. Then watch odometer window to see if the mileage is replaced by a 4-digit number prefixed by a P. If so, let me know what it is as that would be a fault code that explains what might be wrong.
Finally, check the original paperwork for the vehicle as a repair may well be under warranty.
