Chrysler Repair: oil level sender unit, voyger, pressure gauge

Question
On my 2000 Chrysler Voyger van the need oil indicator comes on the dinger sounds.  I keep the oil checked and it does not need oil.  It does not heat up or the engine make noises like it is not getting enough oil.  I suspect it to be the oil level sender unit.  Does that sound right to you?  If so, where is the sender unit located on my vechile so I can change it?  Also how do I check to be sure that is what the problem is?  The indicator comes on when I slow or sometimes for a while after I start up.  The dinger is driving me buggy.

Answer
Hi John,
What engine do you have? Usually the oil warning is only for the oil pressure, not the level, and the oil pressure sensor (sender) is generally located next to the oil filter. The warning light comes on if the pressure is less than 4 psi if the sender is accurate. The standard is typically that at idle it should be at least 5 psi, and at 3,000 rpm between 30 and 80 psi. The actual pressure can be tested by removing the sender and substitutin a pressure gauge to verify that you have sufficient pressure. If you do, then replace the sender. Another simple solution is to raise the oil "weight" one step from what you are using now, which will raise the pressure, possibly such that you won't have the problem any more.
