Chrysler Repair: Transmission Codes P1776 and P0700, solenoid pack, chrysler town and country

Question
I have a 1998 Chrysler Town and Country that recently went into “limp mode”. Check Engine codes revealed P0700 and P1776.  In doing some online research and talking to a locals trans mechanic they tell me I need a new Solenoid Pack.  Is that correct?  The trans mechanic I talked to insists that he needs to replace it so he can hook it up to his computer to re-learn the transmission and not doing so would be unhealthy for the trans and could cause premature damage.  However,  my online research indicates many simply replace it and keep going (plug and play so to speak).  I’m confident I can replace myself.  I can get a new pack for about $150, but the mechanic would charge $250 for the part alone (nice part mark up huh).  Anyhow, I’m trying to save some money but don’t want to compromise the health of my trans that already has 187k on it.  Your advice has always been appreciated.

Answer
Hi Preston,
As I read the manual, if the control module is not replaced, or the mechanical internals of the trans repaired, there is no need to do a quick learn.
So I agree with you on that.
On the need to replace the solenoid pack, the procedure does suggest going through some diagnostics to rule out that simply inspecting/cleaning the L/R switch will solve the problem, that the circuits between the solenoid pack and controller are patent and not shorted, or that the transmission relay itself is the problem. Part of that diagnosis involves using the DRB-III and a Miller Tool transmission simulator. All that diagnosing would exceed $150 so just replacing the pack may well be the way to go. But do check the fluid level in the transmission, and if you are inclined check the harness plugs at both ends. You might look at the old solenoid pack's L/R valve and if it appears to be remdiable try that and if it works return the new pack for a refund.
