Chrysler Repair: 2003 Chrysler Town & Country A/C Problem, factory decal, catastrophic failure

QUESTION: The compressor in our 2003 Town &Country LXi w/3.8L with 122,000 mi. had a catastrophic failure. I removed the compressor, opened, flushed and purged all lines and evaporators. I cleaned the rear expansion valve, installed a new front expansion valve, filter-drier, new HP discharge line from the comp. to the condenser, new condenser, new compressor and an in-line pan-cake filter in the liquid line before the new filter/drier. I vacuumed the system and confirmed that there were no leaks. I purged the system with R134a and then pulled a 2 hr. vacuum and charged the system with 2.7# of R134A. I drove the car for about a 40 mi. test run and decided to re-check the pressures because the front evaporator temp was only 62º. After connecting the gauges, the HP & LP indicated a slight overcharge (about 55/155 psi.).

THE PROBLEM: I was slowly discharging a small amount of  R135A from the system and the compressor quit cycling on. Both the A/C compressor fuse and relay are OK. I installed a new A/C pressure sensor. With the compressor relay bypassed (contacts #30 to #87), the compressor runs OK and the system cools to 52ºF with an ambient temp of 87º.

QUESTIONS: Is the control module causing the fault? Can it be re-programmed or must it be replaced?

Note: I haven’t been to the dealer yet and I don’t have the equipment to check or re-program the module.


ANSWER: go get an ac service from a shop  u need to have 2.88 lbs of freon
over charge would be 3.5lbs of freon.

QUESTION: Thanks for the quick response, but are you sure about the numbers? The factory decal under the hood specifies a 2.69 lb. charge of R134A, not 2.88lb. The clutch was cycling before with less of a charge than it has now.



ANSWER: is the 2.69 what it said on the sticker under the hood?  then go with that.  Also do u have the setting on REC? and when u drive the temp will get down to low 50s. It does not matter how many time the clutch cycles  it cycles based off pressure  outside temp and engine rpm.

QUESTION: THE CLUTCH WILL NOT OPERATE (CYCLE ON) AT ALL UNLESS I BYPASS THE A/C CLUTCH RELAY at the relay socket. I want to know if the CONTROL module can be the culprit and if it can be re-programmed/reset(re-booted). This failure to operate the A/C clutch is the only problem it appears to be causing.
