Chrysler Repair: 1997 Chrysler Sebring passenger side window off track, chrysler sebring, loose screws

Question
Hi Roland,
The passenger side window on my 97 sebring won't go all the way back up.  Is it possible for me to fix this myself?  I tried pulling it while pushing the "window up" button, but that didn't make it sit correctly and I almost broke the glass shutting the door!! yikes.
I'm "just a girl" as my friends like to tell me, they think I should just take it to someone, but I don't have any money for car repairs right now. If I can't fix it myself, would you know how much I might expect to have to pay for the repair?

Answer
Hi Catherine,
The mechanism in the door, called the door window regulator, is the problem. It might just be one of the parts has come loose where it attaches to the door (look around the edge of the door on the underside to observe for any missing/loose screws), or the regulator mechanism could have failed in some manner. To get inside you have to remove the inside trim panel that covers the door, and the plastic sheet that is glued to the metal of the inner door. The shop manual shows the procedure for removing and installing the regulator mechanism through openings in the inner door panel metal. Without knowing what is wrong it is difficult to access any costs. If the regulator is broken the least expensive approach it to either repair it or replace it with one taken from a wreck that you remove yourself at a 'pull-it-yourself' type wrecking yard. I can xerox and postal mail you a couple of pages from the manual that shows you how to get inside the door to examine the mechanism which would be the way to start the process. Then depending upon what you find you can either go from there yourself or go to a body shop where they can look directly at it and give you a more accurate idea of what needs to be done and for how much than if you just bring the car with the problem hidden away from view. Just give me a postal mailing address and I'll send that info.
