Chrysler Repair: How to Install Crank Pulley on 1999 Dodge Grand Caravan, dodge grand caravan, crank pulley

Question
Hi,

I have to install (not remove - already done) the crank pulley on my 99 Grand Caravan with 3.8 litre engine.  Do I need a special tool or can I do it with a bolt or stud with a nut and big washer and perhaps impact gun - or could that damage the crank ?  I've also heard that heating up the pulley helps it on.  Should I lubricate the shaft and pulley bore ?

Thanks,

Steve.

Answer
Hi Steve,
The service manual shows pressing it on by the use of a 5.9 inch screw, and then a nut, thrust bearing and washer plate L-4524 (probably a Miller Tool part#). So I would conclude that you have to do it with a longer bolt, a nut, and something with an inside diameter larger that the crank diameter and a washer to push on that via the nut or something along that line.
The Haynes manual says to use a special tool available at a parts store, or several washers, in the same manner, and cautions to lube the surface of the pulley that seals against the crank oil seal proper so as not damage the seal. Also warns to be careful not over torque beyond 40 foot-pounds, the limit for the pulley bolt, when doing the pressing.
