Chrysler Repair: abs and trac light, diagnostic connector, independent garage

Question
my abs and traction light are coming on at the same time:(  what could this be?

Answer
Hi Glenn,
Of course it means a difficulty with the abs/traction function but the design is such that the worst is that the vehicle will still brake as well as the same vehicle without abs and traction. So it is safe. The best way to find out the problem is to do a readout of the memory of the ABS controller using the standard under dash diagnostic connector, just to the left of the steering wheel. It may be possible to get a free readout at Autozone parts stores near you of an independent garage will do it for about $40. Ask if their reader will interact with the ABS and if not and you can't find such a shop, a dealer will have to do it. The problem will come out in english, not a fault code number on the screen of the reader. Ask what is wrong and how much to fix. Then write back and we'll compare notes. See if the price of the readout will be deducted from the cost of the repair if you don't opt at the moment of diagnosis.
