Chrysler Repair: what causes the malfunction indicator light to comes on in the dodge charger, malfunction indicator light, dodge charger

Question
what causes the malfunction indicator light to comes on in the dodge charger

Answer
Hi Roger,
Whenever the engine computer senses a problem that would increase the emissions from the tail pipe it turns on the light. What you need to do is find out why, and you do that by finding out a two-digit 'fault code' that is stored in the memory of the computer. Use your ignition key: turn it "on-off-on-off-on and leave on", doing that in 5 seconds or less elapsed time. Then watch the malfunction indicator light, which remains "on", to see it begin to flash, pause, flash, etc. Count the number of flashes before each pause. Then repeat the process to be sure you have an accurate count. The last two sets of flashes are always 5 in each. Then group the flash counts in pairs in the order of appearance. The last number will thus be 55 which is the code for 'end of readout'. The other code(s) will tell us what is wrong. You can either write back with the results and we'll go from there, or you can go to www.allpar.com/fix/codes.html where you will get the list of code names. But to use them, they need to be applied to your specific engine. So when you write back tell me what engine, and year you have.

PS To get back to me use the "thank/rate" tab below where there is a space for comments, to which I will respond. Also, notice that you can evaluate my response and you will see an item "nomination" and if you change the 'no' to a 'yes' that will be a vote for me to be the 'expert of the month' for Novemenber. I would appreciate your doing that. Thanks
