Chrysler Repair: 1991 Voyager: back-up lamps?, volt ohm meter, lamp sockets

Question
QUESTION: just bought this van-  back lights will light up-  trying to troubleshoot

ANSWER: Hi Carol,
I am not clear as to what is the problem. If you mean the back-up lamps don't work, then I would beging by checking fuse #24 (20 amp) under the dash on the drivers side. Let me know if that is not the problem or that the fuse is OK. Look carefully at the internal wire to make sure it doesn't have a subtle crack in it.

QUESTION: ok  we decided to go ahead and purchase the van- only needed shocks gotta price them   but still no bk lights  changed  the fuse no lights  owner thinks its in the switch  HMmmmmmm

Answer
Hi Carol,
The "switch" for the back up lamp is on the transmission (side that faces the front of the van) but that would not be the next place to look for the cause. Instead, the next step would be to go to the  right rear fender area (inside the van I suspect, perhaps hidden behind the panelling) where you will find a  back-up lamp relay which is activated by the transmission switch. That relay could be faulty, or the wire from it to the back-up lamp sockets (in fact you could trace that violet/black wire from the lamps 'back' to find the relay) may be disconnected from the relay, or the white wire from the fuse doesn't have 12V on it from the fuse (when the ignition is in the run position), or the violet wire from the switch at the trans is not connected all the way to the relay. So once you find the relay have a helper put the ignition in the run position and then shift into reverse while you listen for whether the relay clicks softly or not. If not, then a little testing with a volt-ohm meter at the relays plug will be necessary, which I can tell you about, if needed. And I can tell you how to check the switch on the transmission.

PS I would be very appreciative, if you read this before 6 PM today,
were you to use the thank/rate tab to give me a 'nomination'. Just find the "nomination?" item and change the 'no' to a 'yes' and submit. Thanks so much.
